The reversal

From orange negative to true color — in an instant.

Color negative film hides its picture behind an orange mask and inverted tones. FilmReverseIt strips the mask, reverses every tone and balances the color the moment you open a scan.

How it works

Three steps from shoebox to photo library

No scanner, no computer, no subscription. Just your film, a light and your device.

  1. 1

    Photograph

Lay the film on a light pad and take a photo with the built-in camera. A level keeps you square, and Macro keeps close-ups sharp.

  2. 2

    Reverse

FilmReverseIt removes the orange mask and turns the negative into a positive straight away — color, black and white, or slide.

  3. 3

    Perfect and save

Crop, balance the color, clean up dust and save a full-resolution photo, tagged with the film, roll and camera.

Features

Everything a film scan needs

The tools of a desktop scanning app, designed for touch.

  • Macro camera lock

Keeps the iPhone’s close-focusing lens in use, so the camera never hunts or switches lenses mid-roll.

  • Built-in level

Hold the phone parallel to the film for straight, evenly focused frames without a copy stand.

  • Color, B&W and slides

Color negatives lose their orange mask, black and white comes out neutral, and slides open as positives.

  • Rotate & crop

Turn frames upright and trim away the film border and sprocket holes with drag handles.

  • One-tap white balance

Tap anything that should be neutral and the whole picture falls into balance. Then fine-tune temperature and saturation.

  • Tone & sharpness

Exposure, brightness, contrast, black level, sharpening and radius — with a double-tap to reset any slider.

  • Noise & grain

Smooth out noise and color speckle, or add back a fine, filmic grain of the size you like.

  • Dust removal

Zoom in and tap each speck. Choose the spot size and how thorough each repair should be.

  • Presets for a whole roll

Save the look of one frame and apply it to the rest of the roll in a tap.

  • Film-aware metadata

Record the film stock, roll, frame, camera, lens and exposure in the saved file — and in its name.

  • Archive-quality formats

JPEG, HEIC, PNG, TIFF, JPEG 2000 or BMP, plus an optional matching negative copy.

  • Photos or Files

Save to your photo library or straight into any folder in Files. Existing files are never overwritten.

Made for iPad too

Room to work on every frame.

On iPad the photo and every control sit side by side, so you can see each adjustment as you make it. Scan with your iPhone, then open the shots on iPad for careful color and dust work.

Questions

Good to know

What do I need to scan my negatives?

An iPhone or iPad, your film, and an even, bright light behind it. A small LED light pad (the kind sold for tracing) works best, but a second phone or tablet showing a plain white screen, or a bright overcast window, will do in a pinch.

Keep the film flat and dust-free — a film holder, or a sheet of anti-newton glass, helps a lot — and turn off the room lights so nothing reflects off the film.

What kinds of film does FilmReverseIt work with?

Color negative film (C-41, with its orange mask), black and white negatives, and positive slide film. Choose Negative or Positive with the Open As switch on the home screen, then pick Color, B&W or Original as the Image Type in the editor.

Any film size you can photograph works: 35mm, 120 medium format, large format sheets and more.

Can I convert photos of negatives I took before?

Yes. Instead of Take Photo, tap Photo Library or Choose File on the home screen to open any photo of a negative — including ones taken with another camera or a dedicated film scanner. FilmReverseIt never changes the original; it saves a new file.

The colors look off. How do I fix them?

Open the Color section, tap Pick White Balance, then tap something in the picture that should be neutral gray or white — a cloud, a white wall, a gray road. FilmReverseIt balances the whole picture around that spot. Fine-tune with Color Temperature and Saturation, and use the Tone sliders (Exposure, Brightness, Contrast and Black Level) for the rest.

To undo a single slider, double-tap its label. Reset All Adjustments starts over but keeps the image type, rotation and crop.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens on your iPhone or iPad. FilmReverseIt has no account, no cloud processing and no tracking — your scans go only where you save them. See the privacy policy for details.
